Medical Aspects of Avalanche Rescue

Courses tailored to your group needs

This course is intended for skiers, snowboarders and mountaineers, who walk or ski in snowy mountainous terrain. It is also addressed to rescuers, ambulance personnel and doctors who are, or may become, involved in avalanche rescue. As this training is provided only to groups we can tailor it to the level appropriate for the members of your organisation.

You will learn the most up-to-date information on the medical aspects of avalanche rescue. The course is based on recommendations on the treatment of avalanche victims discussed and approved by the International Commission for Alpine Rescue (ICAR), and the Medical Commission of the UIAA (the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation). By demonstrating the best practices for the on-site treatment of an avalanche victim, we aim to improve your knowledge and expertise. After attending you will be more familiar with what happens when a person is caught by an avalanche and, hopefully, you will be able to provide your friends or any persons buried by an avalanche with the best treatment possible.

Avalanche1The course is a mix of lecture, avalanche rescue technique footage and group work. We show you the basics of assessment and the proper management of casualties in an avalanche accident. Topics covered include the underlying pathophysiology during a burial, the necessary first aid measures and the medical treatment of avalanche victims. In addition, the importance of self-rescue and the medical aspects of safety equipment are discussed.

The course ends with a 16 question multiple choice test written by the Medical Commission International Mountaineering & Climbing Federation. All participants receive a certificate of attendance and a 20 page booklet.

No previous training is necessary. The course content is graded to suit the needs of participants. The course can be provided as either as a stand alone two and half hour classroom based session or a 1-2 day course including outdoor scenario training. It may also be booked as an add on session to one of our longer courses in Outdoor Emergency Care. We can provide the course either at your location or at one of our venues nationwide.

In-House Training - UK and Abroad

We provide tailored training for a wide range of organisations, from local outdoor activity groups to national bodies such as the Environment Agency, and those with an international focus such as aid organisations and expeditions.
